‘Two best friends。 One missed chance。 And a night that changes everything。’ - cover tag line。 My thanks to HarperCollins U。K。 for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Last Night’ by Mhairi McFarlane in exchange for an honest review。While I don’t often read romantic comedies, I have loved Mhairi McFarlane’s previous novels and so had confidence that this would also prove a great read。 I read it with little foreknowledge about the plot and was glad that I read ‘cold’, so I will only touch on its plot。Eve and ‘Two best friends。 One missed chance。 And a night that changes everything。’ - cover tag line。 My thanks to HarperCollins U。K。 for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Last Night’ by Mhairi McFarlane in exchange for an honest review。While I don’t often read romantic comedies, I have loved Mhairi McFarlane’s previous novels and so had confidence that this would also prove a great read。 I read it with little foreknowledge about the plot and was glad that I read ‘cold’, so I will only touch on its plot。Eve and Susie have been friends since primary school。 Then in the sixth form they met Ed and Justin and the four have been friends ever since。 Now in their early 30s they meet up weekly for a pub quiz night。 However, Eve has been secretly in love with Ed since they were eighteen though he’s been in a relationship with another woman for sixteen years and they have just announced their engagement。 So, Eve loves from afar。 Yet one night, in an instant, all of their lives are changed forever。 This proved a more serious novel than I had expected though was deeply moved by its themes。 Yet while there are bittersweet aspects there was also humour and uplifting elements。 I found myself especially relating to Eve’s Gothic identity with her love of rain and “evocative ruined abbeys”。 Once I started reading I was completely captivated and read in a single sitting。 。。。more

I loved this book! Once I got into it I read most of it in a day。 It’s simultaneously sad, hilarious and romantic- which in my opinion is a great combination。 It deals with some quite heavy stuff but it does so in a way that’s truthful but not too depressing。 I also feel like the romance in it is very self aware and it actually challenges some of the problematic ideas associated with romantic stories。 In that way I feel like it has a similar message to ‘he’s just not that into you’, but it’s tol I loved this book! I loved it and I’m already flicking back through to re-read some of the witty conversations。 I’ve also been listening to “catch” by the Cure and swooning over the vivid picture McFarlane creates。 I’ve never read any of her books before but I will be sure to read more! 。。。more

Boy, was this an emotional one! More than I was expected。 While the plot is completely different, it evokes some similar feelings to Meet Me in Paradise。 With heavy themes of grief and what it means to know someone, this one has the potential to be a tear jerker。 But it is also a romance, and has some humorous moments。 I will say that this book surprised me。 I thought I knew what was happening/going to happen and then the book proved me wrong twice。 TWICE! After reading and enjoying one of McFarlane's other books, I was excited to give this one a try! I enjoyed the main character and think that she did some real growing up over the course of the story, which is always interesting to read about。 My one main confusion is with the pacing of the story。 It felt as if the plot didn't really start until about 20% in and even then not much happened until the last 15%。 The relationship also seemed to go from 0 to 100 rather quickly with not much to go off After reading and enjoying one of McFarlane's other books, I was excited to give this one a try! 4。5 ⭐️Now this book surprised me。 Going in I was like ok these best friends had a moment and then it became awkward = nothing new but I’m here for the journey。My map was wrong and I was happy that it was 。。 it took me a while to get into it bcos I don’t understand British humor and all that 😂 but I enjoyed the pace of it after the call thy changed everything。

Many many thoughts。 Firstly, this book is incredibly well written。 I loved the wit, I loved the characters, I loved the complexities and dynamics of each relationship。 I loved Eve’s journey and character arc。 It was so satisfying to see her understand more about herself and her friendships, and come to terms with certain facts。 The pacing felt a bit off- but it’s just a personal preference of mine。 The second half felt very fast paced compared to the first half。 One thing that is of no fault to Many many thoughts。 Firstly, this book is incredibly well written。 I loved the wit, I loved the characters, I loved the complexities and dynamics of each relationship。 I loved Eve’s journey and character arc。 It was so satisfying to see her understand more about herself and her friendships, and come to terms with certain facts。 The pacing felt a bit off- but it’s just a personal preference of mine。 The second half felt very fast paced compared to the first half。 One thing that is of no fault to the author is that I just didn’t understand a lot of the British slang and references。 Just One Night was gut wrenching, shocking, and hopeful。 It displays the complex relationships between friends realistically and devastatingly。 I look forward to reading more of the authors work。 。。。more

As I'm typing this, I still feel so raw and messed up just thinking about how utterly devastating and beautiful this book is。I have read Mhairi McFarlane's past two books before this and honestly can say that Just Last Night has got to be her most emotional yet。 It consumed me, made me think of the what-if's, reflect on my relationships, and grow alongside Eve's character who I found to be very relatable and loyal and endearing and real。 To learn about her friendships with Susie, Justin, and Ed As I'm typing this, I still feel so raw and messed up just thinking about how utterly devastating and beautiful this book is。I have read Mhairi McFarlane's past two books before this and honestly can say that Just Last Night has got to be her most emotional yet。 It consumed me, made me think of the what-if's, reflect on my relationships, and grow alongside Eve's character who I found to be very relatable and loyal and endearing and real。 To learn about her friendships with Susie, Justin, and Ed and see them interact as a close group and stay tight for more than a decade was so enlightening。 The history was there, the longing to be with each other forever, the separation anxiety, and eventually, the heartbreak。 I loved how McFarlane handled sensitive topics like loss and betrayal and abuse and self-blame。 The romance took a back seat on this one。 It was obvious from the synopsis and the beginning chapter of the book that Eve lost someone she held dear。 And everything from that point on will never be the same。 I felt that。 So many things about this hit home and I appreciated that as the reader, it felt like I was grieving too。 That I'm also looking for that person everywhere, reminiscing the past, and wishing things could've gone differently。 Other things to look forward to:-A feline character and a pet dog named after two gentlemen-Justin's taboo jokes that only he can get away with-A road trip to Edinburgh -Secrets that could potentially ruin everything I cannot NOT give this 5 stars。 I just can't。Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the earc! 。。。more

I just didn't want the book to end) - but illness and comfort reading not withstanding, this book is funny and brilliant, and I thoroughly recommend it to everyone。P。S。 Like I said, Finlay Hart alone。 Other candidates need not apply。 。。。more

This was definitely an interesting discussion point in the reading group!⚖️ With heavy topics explored in a witty and lighthearted manner, it makes this a lovely and heartfelt story that I think lots of readers will really enjoy and find something relatable。 。。。more

Compulsively readable and full of charm and wit, McFarlane's books are often emotionally complex but this is perhaps the most difficult to read。A study of friendship, survival and coping, there's some romance here but it's a lot of tell and little show。 Enjoyable but not something I'll re-read in a hurry。 Compulsively readable and full of charm and wit, McFarlane's books are often emotionally complex but this is perhaps the most difficult to read。A study of friendship, survival and coping, there's some romance here but it's a lot of tell and little show。 Enjoyable but not something I'll re-read in a hurry。 。。。more

I have read all Mhairi McFarlane's books as they came out, and as a writer, she just keeps getting better and better。 'Last Night,' her most recent, is in my very humble opinion, her best to date。 The opening scene entitled 'After,' is clearly of someone grieving, although we don't know who or why at this point; a tantalising glimpse of the story ahead。。。。Then, we are transported to 'Before,' and the story begins。 Long time friends, Justin, Ed, Susie and Eve are at a pub quiz。 The alcohol is flo I have read all Mhairi McFarlane's books as they came out, and as a writer, she just keeps getting better and better。 'Last Night,' her most recent, is in my very humble opinion, her best to date。 The opening scene entitled 'After,' is clearly of someone grieving, although we don't know who or why at this point; a tantalising glimpse of the story ahead。。。。Then, we are transported to 'Before,' and the story begins。 Long time friends, Justin, Ed, Susie and Eve are at a pub quiz。 The alcohol is flowing and the banter in full throttle。 Conversation is natural, easy and full of humour。 These are friends who have known each other for a very long time, and anything goes! However, as with all great stories, the emotional bombshells begin to drop, and we start to gain a bit more access to Eve's psyche。I'm not going to say too much more about the content of the story as that would spoil it for you readers who are lucky enough to still be anticipating what will be an excellent read。 I will say however, that this is an emotional read with raw grief at its source; not just grief at the physical loss of a loved one, but grief at lost beliefs, ways of life, friendships and relationships, and the changes wrought on individuals as a result。 The only comparable story I have come across is Marian Keyes, 'Is Anybody Out There?'Well done Mhairi, you just keep on getting better, and based on this, your most recent offering, I can't wait for your next one!Five complete stars!!!! 。。。more
